Why Your New Build in Sonoma Needs Complete Solar Plans

A home with solar panels on the roof.

Solar Plans Must Be Submitted with the Building Permit Application!

California has long been a leader in solar and renewable energy. To reach its goal of achieving 100% clean energy by 2045, it needs to triple its solar power capacity. To accomplish this, the state has passed several laws, including the California solar mandate, requiring all new homes built in 2020 and beyond to have rooftop solar photovoltaic systems. This system must be able to generate all the energy the home needs over the course of a year.

Now, in Sonoma County, a new regulation regarding solar power took effect on October 1, 2024. It's the reason why your new build needs complete solar plans when you submit your permit.

Here, we'll explore the details, how it's affecting new builds, and how the team at Summit Technology Group can help. Keep reading to find out!

What Are the New Requirements for Solar Plans for New Builds?

Permit Sonoma implemented new requirements for building permits. Unlike in the past, when you could defer solar plans as well as those for trusses and fire sprinklers, these must now be submitted with the building permit application. The requirements include submitting the full site plan, roof or ground layout, and single-line diagrams.

Why the change? According to Permit Sonoma, deferred submittals cause document tracking and approval issues. Without the needed information, such as structural evaluations, complications, delays, and missed inspections were not uncommon.

With the passing of AB2234, mandating quicker permit processing, the writing was on the wall.

What Is a Solar Permit?

For those new to solar power system installations, a solar permit ensures it meets local building codes and safety standards. It involves component specifications, reviewing the system design, electrical diagrams, and inspections verifying compliance.

You'll need building, electrical, and structural permits. An interconnection approval ensures utility compliance, enabling the solar system to connect to the grid.

What Are the Submittal Requirements?

So, what do you need when submitting solar plans? For those of you who have been in Sonoma County for a long time, you know the list is long. A few of the many requirements include:

  • Listing specifications and manufacturer labels for all array components.
  • A single-line electrical diagram and a completed electrical plan.
  • A roof plan that includes PV panels and fire safety items.
  • Self-verification forms for the water-conserving plumbing fixture and the smoke & carbon monoxide alarm.
  • Non-qualifying systems require signed and stamped structural drawings and calculations by a California-licensed structural or civil engineer.
