Situated in the picturesque heart of Napa Valley, this custom home is perfectly nestled alongside a vineyard. It’s designed to complement the owners’ active lifestyle with young children, with a focus on relaxed and enjoyable entertaining. 

Our team at Summit Technology Group has developed a sophisticated, energy-efficient smart home that not only aligns with intuitive technology for everyday ease but also includes reliable backup power sources for continuous comfort and convenience, even during power outages. 

This project exemplifies a seamless fusion of Summit Technology Group's three core specialties: Technology, Electric, and Renewables. 

Our technology experts meticulously integrated advanced systems, including personalized lighting design, comprehensive lighting control, whole-home audio systems, and indoor/outdoor AV systems that enhance ambiance and entertainment spectacularly.

Motorized shades and a robust security system were installed to add privacy and property-wide protection. The electrical team skillfully handled all indoor and outdoor electrical needs, including efficient landscape lighting and establishing a new power service with the utility company. Complementing these systems, our Renewables division installed three high-capacity backup batteries and a solar system designed to offset the home’s energy consumption, increasing sustainability and ensuring resilience.

    Off-Grid Solar Energy System for a Large Private Estate | 6,000 sq ft

    Can a large estate home run off-grid solar?

    Recently, local property owners and their general contractor came to Summit Technology Group with a problem that needed solving. Their 6,000 sq. ft. main residence had long struggled with the realities of rural grid power: rolling power outages, PSPS (Public Safety Power Shutoff) events, and steadily rising PG&E rates. They gave us a clear request: design a system that would make their estate permanently self-sufficient, something built to last for decades with minimal maintenance, and that was capable of riding out wildfire-season PSPS power shutoffs that can last days or even weeks.

    At their request, we completed a full off-grid energy system installation for this private residence in Northern California. The project delivers complete independence from Pacific Gas & Electric by combining an off-grid solar array, whole-home battery storage, an automatic standby generator, and a full electrical panel upgrade into one integrated system — a first of its kind for a private off-grid residence in the area.

    The Problem

    A contractor and their client hired Summit Technology Group (STG) to determine the best way to deliver power to a remote estate property requiring a robust off-grid energy solution.

    The nearest utility connection was over a mile away, which would have required extensive trenching, boring, and the clearing of mature trees across undisturbed land. Beyond the environmental disruption, overhead powerlines introduced unacceptable visual impact and fire risk which is an ever-growing concern across Sonoma, Marin, and Napa counties in Northern California. The client and contractor needed a unique path forward in order to bring their residential vision to life.

    After evaluating the site, Summit determined that an off-grid solar solution powered by renewables was the clear choice: it would eliminate utility infrastructure entirely, preserve the natural landscape and views for the homeowners, and remove the fire risk associated with relying on overhead lines.

    Our Challenge

    Designing a true off-grid energy system for a home of this scale meant solving two core engineering problems at once:

    • Providing enough battery storage and inverter capacity to allow the estate to operate exactly like an on-grid home with no compromises and no lifestyle adjustments.
    • Building in a reliable backup for periods of low solar production or battery depletion (low State of Charge), so the system could handle winter usage with extended cloud cover without interruption.

    Our Approach

    Summit designed the system from the ground up around a solar-first philosophy. Think of it this way: if solar is the engine, and batteries are the fuel tank, the goal was to size both systems large enough for the home to run entirely on solar and stored energy throughout the year, with a generator stepping in autonomously only when weather conditions require it.

    Key elements of our design process included:

    • Detailed load modeling: we determined total energy and peak usage across all major appliance systems (kitchen appliances, HVAC, lights, pool, EV charger, etc.).
    • Solar production analysis: we studied the actual property to figure out how much sunlight the solar panels would realistically capture and accounted for which direction the panels face, any trees or hills casting shadows, and the fact that winters get far less sun than Northern California summers.
    • Battery storage sizing: we calculated how big the battery backup system needed to be so the home could run through the night, when there is no solar, and survive several cloudy days in a row without running out of stored power.
    • Intelligent load management: we programmed the system to automatically make smart decisions when the batteries start getting low. For example, turning off the hot tub or AC temporarily so the lights, refrigerator, and other essential appliances keep running without interruption.
    • Integration of backup generation for full redundancy: we added a generator as a last resort. If the sun hasn't shined in days and the batteries are nearly empty, the generator kicks on by itself — no one has to flip a switch or even notice the switch happened.

    The final system was built around three layers of off-grid energy solutions: 1) solar as the primary source, 2) battery backup and storage, and 3) a generator for redundancy, delivering a very low carbon footprint overall.

    We also worked with the client and project partners to shift heavy loads like EV charging to daytime hours when solar production is at its peak, further reducing the draw on battery storage. In short, we provided a solution where the house always has power, manages itself automatically, and never leaves the homeowner scrambling.

    This approach is becoming the standard for estate-scale projects across Sonoma, Marin, and Napa counties, where the risk of long-term power outages and utility-caused fires has made grid dependence an increasingly poor trade-off. An off-grid system eliminates that exposure for the homeowners entirely.

    What began as previous requests to provide smaller off-grid hunting cabin solutions has now evolved into a large, full-featured estates — complete with saunas, cold plunges, swimming pools, full HVAC systems, and whole-home battery backup automation.

The system runs autonomously, manages its own loads intelligently, and will scale up with the property over time.
