Reasons to Hire a Pro for Your Smart Home Installation

Chances are you have at least one smart home device in your home. Nowadays most homes have multiple smart devices whether it be a smart speaker, smart plug, or smart light bulbs. You can find just about a smart version of anything these days – even salt and pepper shakers!

But just because something is labeled “smart”, doesn’t mean that is truly is. Often times homeowners install multiple smart devices over a period of time and then find that those devices create headaches instead of making life easier which is what they are supposed to do. Many times, the devices don’t talk to each other and require separate apps.

It’s safe to say that home automation is on the rise in Sonoma County. However, this means that so is the number of homeowners who think they have the necessary skills to install a variety of smart home systems instead of hiring experts to perform the install.

A smart home professional will help you choose the right smart automation system for your home. They will create a customized home automation solution to fit your unique needs and ensure that it is installed and programmed in a way that will mitigate any future issues.

Summit Technology Group understands what a headache DIY devices can cause. That is why they approach whole home automation in Sonoma County intelligently. When done correctly, a smart home enhances your lifestyle, not hinders it.

Whether you use an electric generator, a diesel generator, a portable generator or a gasoline generator, make regular maintenance a priority.

Regular maintenance prevents problems. A well-maintained standby generator is safer, more efficient and will last longer. It consumes less fuel, needs less frequent repair, and is less prone to breaking down.

Here are some tips to keep your home standby generator in tip-top shape.

Change Your Standby Generator’s Oil Regularly

Make changing your generator oil a part of your regular maintenance plan. Changing your standby generator’s oil regularly will reduce friction between the different components of the engine, preventing them from overheating.

Batteries & Generators: Can They Work Together with Solar?

Whether caused by a natural disaster or inclement weather, a power outage can bring your life to a grinding halt. An outage can last a few minutes, a few hours, or even a few days. Luckily, a little planning and preparation can go a long way towards mitigating the impact of a power outage.

If your area experiences frequent power outages, consider investing in a solar system with backup battery. A typical battery backup system stores energy produced by solar panels for later use. Modern backup batteries are much more energy efficient and more affordable than their predecessors.

However, there is a limit to the amount of energy that a solar battery can store. If your budget allows, consider investing in a generator and a solar battery. Once your solar battery exhausts its charge, your generator will power your household equipment while you recharge your battery. You can opt for a natural gas, diesel or propane powered generator.

Here are some things to consider when buying a solar battery:

  • Depth of discharge
  • Round-trip efficiency
  • Battery capacity and power
  • Battery life and warranty

If only one light flickers, you can fix it by swapping it out for a new one or tinkering with the connection. However, on the other hand, if multiple lights flicker or the entire building begins to flicker, you must call in a professional electrician right away.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space empty_h="0"][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1621938993861{margin-top: 8px !important;}"]Outlets Are Either Charred or Hot – If the outlets in your building feel too hot to the touch, unplug everything connected to the outlet immediately. Tips to Prepare Your Backup Generator for Winter

Now is the right time to prepare your generator for the winter months as generators can develop several problems during this cold season. When the temperature drops, the particles of generator fuel can coalesce, making it difficult for you to operate the generator. If your generator has an electric starter, the batteries may lose cranking power.

Low oil shutdown sensors may experience problems in winter. Malfunctioning oil shutdown sensors will prevent the generator from starting.

Here are some tips to prepare your generator for winter.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text_font="font-728346" text_size="h5" text_weight="600"]Inspect Your Batteries[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1617918591719{margin-top: 8px !important;}"]Before winter hits in full force, inspect your batteries to check whether the lead plates remain coated with sulfate. Make sure the breaker is closed. If it trips, reset it.

Check battery connections; clean and securely tighten them whenever required. To prevent corrosion, apply a battery saver to batteries regularly. If your batteries are on their last legs or have developed a significant problem, replace them.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text_font="font-728346" text_size="h5" text_weight="600"]Check Your Generator’s Fuel Levels[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1617918622535{margin-top: 8px !important;}"]Make sure your portable generator has enough oil to keep it running. Check the oil level whenever you add fuel to your generator and top off if required. Add fuel stabilizer at least once a year. Always keep a few quarts of oil on hand and continue to check oil levels every 24-48 hours if the generator is running. Consider switching to winter-grade oil designed to reduce friction between different parts.

For permanently installed generators that are connected to natural gas, levels should be fine. For permanently installed generators running on propane, be sure to check your propane tank levels to ensure there is enough.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text_font="font-728346" text_size="h5" text_weight="600"]Inspect Replaceable Parts[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1617918667539{margin-top: 8px !important;}"]Check your generator’s carburetor, fuel filter, spark plug, and air filter for dirt and damage. The system utilizes this surplus energy to power your appliances during power outages.

Solar batteries are either AC or DC coupled. In an AC-coupled battery system, the solar inverter converts DC to AC, then a second inverter in the battery converts AC back to DC to be stored in the battery. During a grid power outage, the battery inverter converts DC back to AC to power your loads.

With a DC-coupled battery system, DC is produced by the solar panels and stored in the battery. PROJECT SUMMARY:

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]This exquisite wine country compound was built in 1998 and has been featured in numerous, renowned architectural publications. The estate boasts wine country vistas and provides multiple living areas including a spacious 3,454 sq. ft. main residence, an airy 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom guest house with fireplace and balcony. A pool house with full bathroom, steam shower and wine cellar. Also included is a spa, multiple patios, private verandas and a bocce ball court with stunning views amidst mature oak trees. The interior features high exposed wood ceilings with dramatic up-lighting. When built, the property included the latest Lutron lighting control system including dual HW-MA-8-120 processors and Vario dimmers. The current owner purchased the property two years ago as a weekend retreat and rental property. Unfortunately, renters tended to leave on multiple incandescent lights when vacating the home, leading to high power bills. The customer attempted to manage costs by replacing incandescent with LED lamps and was disappointed to learn they flickered and would not work correctly with the vintage lighting control system. Summit recommended an upgrade to Lutron QS lighting control, replacing somewhat damaged Vario dimmers with elegant Maestro dimmers and SeeTouch keypads, presented with architectural wall plates to match the home’s comfortable style and even installed solar to further save the customer on electricity bills.[/vc_column_text][vc_gallery el_id="gallery-839445" medias="3285,3286,3287,3288,3284" style_preset="metro" gutter_size="1" media_items="media|lightbox|original" screen_lg="1000" screen_md="600" screen_sm="480" single_overlay_opacity="50" single_padding="2" interval="0" images="2026,2027,2028,2029,2030,2031,2032,2033,2034,2035" items="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"][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Generators are a godsend to families during power outages.

A backup generator can power all the major appliances used in your household, and your home’s heat and medical equipment when you are not connected to the grid. If you live in an area plagued by power outages, a backup generator can help avoid inconvenience and losses during power blackouts.

Before you start looking for a residential generator, educate yourself on the different options available. Equipped with the right information and knowledge, you will be able to choose the right generator for your home.

To help you get started, we take a look at different types of generators used in homes.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text_font="font-728346" text_size="h5" text_weight="600"]Whole House Generators[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1617917243949{margin-top: 8px !important;}"]As the name implies, a whole house generator will keep your home’s systems and appliances powered up during power outages. Alternatively, a whole-house system can be used to supply power to a few designated circuits.

The Importance of Regular Electrical Service Panel Maintenance

Over time, the service panel may become corroded, or dust may settle on different components. Dust, debris, or loose connections can cause your electrical panel to malfunction, putting your business or home at risk for tripped circuit breakers and power outages. To steer clear of these issues, maintain your electrical service panel regularly.

Electrical contractors in Sonoma County recommend having the service panel inspected and maintained by a contractor at least once every three years.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text_font="font-728346" text_size="h5" text_weight="600"]Why Maintain Your Service Panel?[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1602265966910{margin-top: 8px !important;}"]Your electrical service panel is the central distribution point for delivering electricity from the utility company to switches, outlets, and appliances in your home. A faulty electrical panel will not just damage electrical appliances connected to it, but can also pose a safety hazard.
Breakers and lose wires can cause overheating. If you do not move quickly to address the problem, it will snowball into a major concern, and you may end up spending a ton of money on expensive repairs.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text_font="font-728346" text_size="h5" text_weight="600"]What is Done During a Maintenance Session?[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1602265989759{margin-top: 8px !important;}"]During a maintenance session, your electrician will check for signs of rust, wear and tear, and corrosion. The professional will clean the different components of your panel.
They will check all necessary connections and conduct a thermal check to detect high temperatures, one of the most common indicators of electrical problems.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text_font="font-728346" text_size="h5" text_weight="600"]Signs Your Electrical Service Panel Needs to Be Maintained or Replaced[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1602270774692{margin-top: 24px !important;}"]

Frequent Panel Tripping Does your circuit breaker trip frequently? This can be an indicator that you are using more appliances than your circuit can accommodate. An electrical panel trips off to prevent the wires from overheating. If you are facing the problem, have your breaker replaced.
Flickering Lights If your lights flicker when household appliances are in use, there could be a connection problem. If an appliance operates but seems to have a diminished output, there is a possibility that your circuits are overloaded. This is an indicator that your panel is outdated and is unable to handle the load.
Burning Smell or Discolored Outlets If your service box has a poor connection, a huge amount of power will be generated in a small area. When the heat rises, you can smell burning. Overheating can cause your outlet to become discolored. This is a serious issue and requires immediate attention.

The Benefits of Professional Home Security System Installation

[vc_row row_height_percent="0" override_padding="yes" h_padding="3" top_padding="3" bottom_padding="3" back_color="color-xsdn" overlay_alpha="50" gutter_size="3" column_width_percent="100" shift_y="0" z_index="0"][vc_column column_width_percent="100" gutter_size="3" style="light" overlay_alpha="50" shift_x="0" shift_y="0" shift_y_down="0" z_index="0" medium_width="0" mobile_width="0"][vc_column_text]Home security is a major concern in the U.S. According to a study, around 2.5 million burglaries are reported every year in different parts of the country.

That’s almost 5 burglaries every minute! You or one of your family members can monitor different areas of your property when at home, but what happens when no one is home?A home security system allows you to keep an eye on your house from any part of the world. Most burglars look for an easy target, a property with no or minimum security. Installing a home security system is one of the most effective ways to deter burglars and intruders.

Modern security systems do more than just protecting homes. An advanced security system may include protection sensors designed to alert owners to safety risks such as carbon monoxide leaks or fire breakouts.

There are two ways to install a home security system – you can either take the DIY route or hire a home security system installer near you in Sonoma County. We advise against DIY security system installation. Some jobs are best left to the experts. Installing a security system is one of them.

How your home security system is installed has a major impact on its performance. One of the biggest perks of professional installation is greater assurance that your home security system will be installed correctly. Home security system installation companies employ knowledgeable experts who know everything there is to know about security systems. They use time-tested techniques to ensure flawless execution.

As temperatures soar, you will have numerous opportunities to entertain outside with BBQ parties, family gatherings, and outdoor parties. If you want to enhance the way you entertain in your outside living spaces, consider installing an outdoor audio and video system.

An outdoor AV system is a great long-term investment. Modern outdoor AVs are built to withstand the elements and can last for years. You will always have entertainment at hand even when you cannot leave your house.

When adding an AV system to your outdoor area, you do not have to change your decor. If you want widespread sound coverage, consider installing multiple landscape speakers throughout the backyard. Look for speakers that blend into the surroundings. Opt for compact and lightweight below-ground subwoofers.

Use in-wall and in-ceiling speakers designed to provide enveloping sound experience without consuming too much space. Look for wall mounts, special outdoor TV cabinets, and lifts to conceal large-screen TVs when they are not in use.

Another great reason to opt for an outdoor AV is to seamlessly integrate with your home’s automation and smart technologies. Look for an audiovisual installation company near you to integrate your AV equipment into your existing setup. With an integrated setup, you will be able to access streaming movies and music, vinyl records, the radio, and audiobooks from any area in your home.

4 Ways to Prepare for Public Safety Power Shutoffs

[vc_row row_height_percent="0" override_padding="yes" h_padding="3" top_padding="3" bottom_padding="3" back_color="color-xsdn" overlay_alpha="50" gutter_size="3" column_width_percent="100" shift_y="0" z_index="0"][vc_column column_width_percent="100" gutter_size="3" style="light" overlay_alpha="50" shift_x="0" shift_y="0" shift_y_down="0" z_index="0" medium_width="0" mobile_width="0"][vc_column_text]Utility companies can turn off power during extreme weather. This is done to ensure public safety. Some common conditions that can lead to power shutoff are low humidity and high-speed winds. Power to high-risk areas such as those with dry vegetation is usually cut first.

If your utility company assesses a public safety risk, it will notify you and other residents in your area before shutting off power. A power outage can last from a few hours to several days. You need to set up an emergency plan that can help tackle safety risks and steer clear of inconvenience during power shutoffs.

Here are some tips to prepare for power shutoffs:[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text_font="font-728346" text_size="h5" text_weight="600"]Update Contact Information[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1602269114282{margin-top: 8px !important;}"]If you have recently changed your number or email address, make sure your utility company has your updated contact details. A power outage can render electricity-dependent devices such as your laptop useless; which means you won’t be able to access any data (including important contact info) saved on those devices. If your phone battery dies, you won’t be able to call anyone.

To reduce dependency on technology, create a backup. Write down important phone numbers on a piece of paper. Make sure everyone has a copy.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text_font="font-728346" text_size="h5" text_weight="600"]Conduct Drills to Check Preparedness[/vc_custom_heading][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1602269056209{margin-top: 8px !important;}"]Conduct drills to check the preparedness level of your family members. Check whether everyone knows how to use a flashlight and radio, and to change batteries. Everyone should be able to locate the emergency kit.

Family members who drive should be able to open the garage door manually. Make sure everyone knows where they have to go if they can’t stay at home. Using the paste URLs function of the Bulk Backlinks Checker, you may examine the backlink counts for up to 400 URLs.

The Community Outreach program began in the Spring of 2019 and continues into 2020.

“My father started this company in Santa Rosa over 50 years ago,” says Larry Dashiell, President at Summit Technology Group. “It is very important that we continue to support the community that has been supporting us all this time.”

“Each month we support a different community partner,” says Donna Natale, Human Resource Manager at STG. “While we may not be able to do large in person groups, we are finding creative ways to continue to give back even with the unique circumstances of shelter in place. One of those ways is by providing every one of our 65 employees with a gift card to a local restaurant which helps our employees and community.”

Over the past year, STG has donated hundreds of volunteer hours, over 700# of food, helped build houses, and made many memories. Everyone knows that employees are the backbone of a company and now that they are impacted yet again by a disaster, STG is also taking care of them by:

• Avoiding layoffs by temporarily decreasing hours
• Providing extended family leave days
• Offering online training so employees are guaranteed at least 32 hours/wk
• Supplying PPE for essential field employees
• Setting up remote work capabilities for most employees
